So, you’re planning to spend your vacation at home. Whether this was to save money or simply because you don’t want to bother making plans, you now have an entire week to do nothing but spend all day with your pup. But you still want to make this a fun time for both of you. Nobody wants to be bored to tears on their week off! You’re on vacation, for crying out loud! Here are some friendly tips on what to do on your staycation while making sure you and your pup have a good time.
It could be a new trail or just a walk through a new part of town but it’s always a good idea to take your dog out and get those feet moving. Having some time off is a perfect excuse to explore new places and there’s probably nothing your pup likes better than going on a new adventure with you.
Does your dog like going for a ride in the car? There are plenty of places you can go that are only an hour or two away. Maybe plan a day backpacking trip with your dog. Your pooch can ride happily in the back seat with its head out the window, tongue lolling to the side. It’s totally up to you where you go – maybe visit some family members or take a trip to a dog-friendly beach. Stop by a friend’s cottage for the day. Wherever you go, this can be a great day out for the two of you while still keeping it close to home.
This doesn’t apply to every retailer but there are certainly some who will let you bring your pup with you when you shop. Pet stores are usually a safe bet. Take your dog into a pet store and watch it happily wag its tail at every toy and treat it sees. It’s a safe bet that fellow customers and pet store workers will fawn all over your pooch which is what everyone wants, really. Your pup will leave with a new toy and you’ll feel great that you’ve made your dog so happy. Plus, you’ve gotten out for a few hours. It’s a win-win.
Paying for a hotel in your local area might defeat the purpose of a staycation, but it can still be fun to do. One night away from your own home with room service and a spa? Come on. Obviously, you’ll have to find pet-friendly accommodations which is not as hard as you might think. If the hotel doesn’t advertise directly on their website that they’re pet-friendly, just give them a call and ask. Worst case scenario is that they say no and you have to do one of the other awesome things on this list instead.
This is a fun activity for your friends and their pooches and no one needs to worry about leaving their dog at home for the day. Make some dog-friendly treats or homemade dog food that are safe for everyone to eat and whip up some tasty burgers for your friends. Just make sure that all the dogs involved get along and that it doesn’t turn into too much of a fiasco. Your friends will be relieved that they don’t have to worry about going home early and your pup will have a ball playing with its friends.
Yes, these both of these things exist and they can both be a ton of fun for your dog! Even if your dog isn’t much of a swimmer, it will still enjoy splashing its feet around in the water and playing with the other dogs that have come to do the same thing. Have a look online for dog-friendly beaches or pools in your area if you haven’t already. There’s no way that this won’t be a fun day out for both of you.
Sometimes, the best part of a staycation is just being able to take a nap. And what better way to take a nap than with your pooch by your side? A nap is especially wonderful after a day out, when you and your pup and are exhausted from a day of walking, hiking, or going to the beach. Set your alarm for an hour (or three, you’re on vacation, after all), close your eyes, and let the snuggles begin.
Did you know that many wineries welcome dogs? Many of them do and even allow your dog to sit with you outside while you sip wine and enjoy the view. Some even welcome them into wine tasting rooms. Luckily for us dog owners, more and more places are becoming pet-friendly. The worst they can say is “no” if you ask to bring your pooch along.
There are a lot of games you can play with your dog, including hide and seek, fetch, hiding the treats, and more. You can have so much fun just spending the day playing games and bonding with your pup and it will love you all the more for it.
When it comes to planning a staycation with your dog, the possibilities really are endless. Keep in mind that all your pup cares about at the end of the day is spending time with you. If you’re having fun, it’s having fun. Plan a day trip here and there and make sure to bring some CBD dog treats, if you’re so inclined but just be there with your pup. It’ll love you a little bit more for it.
